Women in Engineering (WiE) Luncheon
Keynote Talk
Abstract: Intelligent systems are designed to learn from experience, adapt to changing environments, interact with others, and improve over tme. In many ways, successful careers develop through the same processes. Drawing on Dr. Tang’s own research on human-centered intelligent systems, this talk will highlight how learning, adaptaton, and feedback can provide useful perspectves on professional growth. Partcularly, she will connect these ideas to her own journey in research and professional service, illustratng how partcipaton in technical societes can create opportunites to learn beyond one’s immediate field, build meaningful collaboratons, contribute to the broader community, and gradually develop leadership experience.
Bio: Ying (Gina) Tang is an IEEE Fellow and a Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Rowan University, New Jersey, USA, where she also serves as Associate Director of the Machine Learning & Artficial Intelligence and Virtual RealityCenter (MARVC). Her research centers on cyber-physical-social intelligence, with anemphasis on modeling, control, and AI-driven approaches for adaptaton and personalizaton in complex systems. Dr. Tang currently leads multple projects funded by the Natonal Science Foundaton (NSF), U.S. Army, Federal Aviaton Administraton (FAA),Google, and other organizatons. Her research integrates artficial intelligence and extended reality (XR) to create intelligent, immersive, and adaptve systems for educaton, training, and complex decision-making environments. She holds three U.S. patents and has authored more than 270 peer-reviewed publicatons. Beyond her research, Dr. Tang has held numerous leadership roles within the IEEE Systems, Man, and Cybernetcs Society (SMCS),contributng to its financial stewardship, strategic planning, publicatons, membership, and technical actvites. She currently serves as a Senior Editor for IEEE Transactons on Systems, Man, and Cybernetcs: Systems and IEEE Transactons on Intelligent Vehicles, and as an Associate Editor for IEEE Transactons on Computatonal Social Systems and Springer’s Discover Artficial Intelligence. Dr. Tang has received numerous honors for her research and professional contributons, including the 2026 IEEE Philadelphia Secton Benjamin Franklin Key Award, the 2025 IEEE SMCS Outstanding Service to Humanity Award, and the 2025 IFAC TC Award for Outstanding Achievement in Social Computng and Cyber-Physical-Social Systems.
